Darl (3-5)
Cash works monotonously on Addie's coffin,
"Snooore, Snoooore, Snooooore"
goes his saw
against the reluctant wood.
Addie watches his progress through her gaping window, half dead, strength being swept away with each motion
of Cash's instrument,""Snooore, Snoooore, Snooooore" ..
Peabody (41-46)Poetry These people, this family,
is more than a little batty,
I can't say what makes them
stand out of the normal mix,
it might be that Vardaman fellow
he's beyond anything I could fix...
over the hill, up the stairs,
I'm a little out of breath.
but what I find, by God, its rank,
the soft approach of death.
Anse, the pocketer, that selfish man,
sucking on his gums,
as gone and just 'bout killed his wife,
that would've lasted years to come.
'sigh'
and now a moment to catch my breath,
that hill really was a dosey...
Vardaman's Diary (Dewey Dell 58-64)
Small Mouth Catch by OakleyOriginals.
Dear my diary,
I am setting with the horses in the barn and they hear me but don't say. That big man kilt her and I see him and I want to make him see what he done because he sawpost to make ma better. Then comes in Dewey Dell she called me but I don't care 'cause I'm the only one angry that he kilt her and she dont care for anything but supper. She only wandering why I'm here. I tell her why that he kilt her and start to cry. The cow is sad too and moos sad with me. She said that I need to go now because there be nothin' left for me to eat and they'd leave me 'lone if I don't listen. He kilt her and I'm the only one angry but I leave and walk up the hill and to the house though I'm angry. I don't want to eat I'm mad. The fish is gone and so is ma too. Tull (73)
Tull sees Vardaman, who is devastated by his mother's death, lying exhausted near the coffin in which Addie lies, and in an attempt to be closer to her, bored holes with Cash's auger into her casket. He missed twice, sending the tool into her face, boring holes through her head. It doesn't take long for the smell of her rotting corpse to attract carrion, who dive at her in an attempt for sustainance.
Extended Response- Cash (82-83) ...Jewel nor even Darl realizes the importance of keeping something in order. Down to the dot, as I'd say. Otherwise, things'll catch up to yeh in the end. Down to the dot, always and forever. Darl thinks too much about things, slows him down. That's all fine and dandy, but once you get down to it, the only thing you can trust is good 'ol fasion mathematics. It's a legacy, like Aristotle or someone another I've heard about. They'd the world in their hands, they did. And everything turned out fine and balanced in the end. Down to the dot, as I'd say.
14. So I double check my work, down to the dot
15. Keep an eye on Jewel. He sure can make a mess of things...
Ah, that Darl. My, my, what a fine mistake you turned out to be. You might be the only one of my family to understand how terrible and ridiculous this quest truely is. Perhaps the only one without your own intentions. And yet, you quietly contemplate the situation, always thinking, those 'ol cogs in your head spinnin' like the wheels of the wagon on which I rest. You will trudge on, mindin' your own, until the time is right and you might put a stop to it. Why? I don't think even you know. But as much as I scorn your existence, I commend your spirit. It's a shame they will never understand you.
And so they move, my dedicated clan. My flesh will boil and fester, and will bring all those that reside near to me, questioning the smell of death. And even in death, my aloneness will be violated in all public places. Anse, you corpse. I know you may get what you will in the end, but may I bring hell with it. And Jewel, your misunderstanding will prolong all their misery, and though my heart has stopped it warms with the joy of this knowledge.
But what more could be asked for, to repay what long I have suffered? I have given Anse what he wished, and now he
gives what I wish. In these days of torment I will gain eternal satisfaction.
In a world such as this, does sanity exist?
Darl is dragged off onto a train, to an asylum in Jackson, ranting on and on at the irony of his plight. He begins to doubt his sanity himself, referring to himself in the third person and eventually being overwhelmed with the complexity and cruelty of a universe where he is loved by no one and even his own family betrays him...
Jewel's Diary (Cash 258-261)
Another goddamn day, in my goddamn Diary, why do I even bother anymore?
I thought that I would be doing somethin' right for ma, givin' my horse away and goin' on this damned journey, you know it what she wanted and all right? But, now that she's done and found in the earth and I really know what's been up with pa and Dewey Dell and Vardaman in their goddamn stupid heads of theirs. They've all been thinkn' of themselves, the hell with ma pa just wants some goddamned teeth and Dewey Dell's all knocked up. Vardaman's just too damned retarted to realize that Santa won't be bringn' the ol' choo choo to see, but maybe he'll chuck it down our goddamned chimney on Christmas for him and he just keeps hopin' on it, for Chissake. But at least we got ma in the ground, what the hell's left to do? That bastard Darl I thought might've actually cared but that goddamned attention he always gets from everyone's got to him, and he's gone and tried to do what he thinks is best and destroy all our progress by burnin' up ma. I would've killed him, that goddamned nut. At least now he's somewhere where he'll be gettin' a lot of attention and them white coats goin to keep him all comfy and outta the way. Maybe I'll actually get some praise once and a while from now on, not that I goddamned care if I get it from those bastards.
